I visited the National Portrait Gallery, DC this past weekend to see the Asian American Portraits of Encounter exhibition, and totally fell in love with this gallery. Zhang Chun Hong, a Chinese-born artist living and working in this country whose work combines traditional skills with contemporary ideas.
Zhang references her own identity through disembodied images of long, straight, black hair. The exaggerated scale of the scrolls transforms this very personal exploration into a universal theme. The charcoal medium creates a visual image of her hair, which incorporates fine details, darkness, and illumination.
These are some of the scrolls from that were exhibited until this past weekend. You can see more of them on her portfolio site here -> http://www.hongchunzhang.com/
